LinkedIn can be an untapped “goldmine” for you if you know how to leverage the platform and make it work to land higher-paying clients, build brand visibility, get speaking opportunities, and engage in strategic alliances.
Now, I want to be completely transparent and let you know that I have made many mistakes on LinkedIn that have not helped my business. But, as I learned what to do and what NOT to do, this platform has been a game-changer in my business, and I help my clients use LinkedIn (the right way) in their businesses to grow.
Here are 4 must-knows if you want to “mine” the gold hidden within the platform of LinkedIn.
Please know, there are many more things to know about LinkedIn, but these four things I am sharing are valuable enough to get you going in the right direction to make LinkedIn work better for you.
- PRIME YOUR PROFILE
Set up your profile in the right way, so your ideal clients can clearly see how you help your clients, what you do, who you are, and what makes you different from everyone else in your industry. Your profile should be less about YOU and more about the value you bring to the market for your clients. You don’t want it to look like a resume (unless you are looking for a job.)
I heard someone say that you should have a friend or colleague check out your profile for ten seconds and then tell you what they think you do and how you help your clients. BRILLIANT! I can’t take credit. Thank you, Joel, for this one.
Also, make sure people can see the results you get, a way to go deeper to learn more about you (a great video, training, or lead magnet), and be sure and optimize your profile with keywords people would search for.
Your BANNER, HEADLINE, ABOUT section, and FEATURES sections are the prime real estate on your profile and should be used for lead generation. People don’t care about you; they care about what you can do for them and that you can do what you say you can do.
Also, it is important to get your profile dialed in because LinkedIn is a robust search engine, and your profile will come up to the top of Google when people search for you (often above your website.) Make it count!
- AUTHORITY & CREDIBILITY BUILDING CONTENT
You can get more eyes on your expertise, build your brand awareness, attract your perfect clients, and get more connections and opportunities coming to you when you have your profile optimized with valuable content.
Your content should be a mix of who you are as a person and brand, your expertise, social proof of results you get your clients, and content that people will engage with (such as a poll, a great question, or even something a bit controversial.) By having valuable and engaging content, you are not only getting more visibility, but you are also laying the foundation for building relationships and meaningful connections. You are also adding value to your market to engage dream clients.
- CONNECT & ENGAGE WITH YOUR PERFECT PEOPLE
People do business with people they know, like, and trust, so build your connections with people that will help your business grow.
One of my clients recently landed a valuable partnership on LinkedIn with my strategy, and he closed a multi-five-figure deal from that partnership referral. The best part is, there will be much more to come from this one relationship. So, think BIGGER than just finding clients on LinkedIn.
Connecting with everyone for the sake of building connections is the wrong approach. Fill your network with people who could be clients, referrals or joint venture partnerships, or help you land opportunities (such as speaking engagements or being a guest on someone’s podcast.) However, always serve first to get back. Be sure and engage in your network’s posts and content and network to build relationships.
- CONSISTENCY
Most consultants and coaches struggle with consistency in their marketing efforts, which is a big reason why so many don’t get into higher levels in their business. The more active, consistent, and engaged you are, the more LinkedIn will work for you. This is how you begin to mine the gold that is hidden within the LinkedIn platform. Be sure not to stop 3 feet before the gold.
Again, this isn’t everything there is to know about making LinkedIn work, but I can’t put it all into one article!
