If your business grows primarily through relationships and referrals, and you are selling contracts and project work at six-figure, multi-six-figure, or seven-figure levels, this is specifically for you. And, if you are excellent at what you do and you aren’t selling at this level, you should be (let’s talk). 😉
If your clients are organizations, firms, and business owners making serious buying decisions, you have probably tried many of the marketing tactics most marketers sell. Or maybe you have been told to post more content, build your social media presence, run ads, LinkedIn outreach for the hundreds, get on more stages, book more podcasts, run webinars, or start your own podcast. Do more, more, more.
And yet the caliber of clients, the size of the contracts, and the revenue your expertise deserves are still not fully reflecting what you have built.
At six and seven-figure contract values, every opportunity that goes to a competitor is not just a lost sale. It is a lost fortune. And the cost of weak positioning, random referrals, and a lack of precision in business development is enormous.
It is not because you are not good enough or you’re not working hard enough. Traditional marketing isn’t built for the type of business you have.
Traditional marketing was built for selling products and low-value transactional services to consumers. This is why many of the tactics you may be using or have used are costing your business. Think… the wrong tool for the job.
Businesses where referrals and relationships drive business decisions require completely different approaches and systems.
The Real Problem with Traditional Marketing for Relationship-Based Businesses
Traditional marketing is designed to broadcast to a mass audience, build brand awareness, and generate volume. It works beautifully for consumer brands and product companies. But relationship and referral-based businesses do not grow that way.
Your best clients, the ones who would hire you for the six and seven-figure engagements, come from trust, a relationship, a referral, and ultimately a conversation. Not from an ad. Not from a social media post. Not from a cold email sequence.
So when you invest in traditional marketing, and it produces inconsistent results, it is not a failure of your business. It is a mismatch between the tool and the type of business you have.
Traditional marketing broadcasts to an audience at volume and “hopes” the right person is listening, paying attention, or seeing it. Precision business development engineers the right conversations with the right people.
The difference is significant. One is unpredictable. The other is engineered.
What Relationship and Referral-Based Businesses Actually Need
What most established expert-led businesses and firm owners are missing is not more content or marketing.
It is a precision business development system that consistently engineers the right relationships, gets you into more high-quality conversations with decision-makers and high-caliber buyers, multiplies the right referrals, and positions you as the obvious choice for high-caliber contracts and project work.
When you are competing for high-end contracts, the buying decision happens long before the proposal is written. The relationship, positioning, and trust determine who gets the work. This is a completely different approach from traditional marketing. And it is built specifically for how relationship and referral-based businesses win the biggest opportunities.
It comes down to three things I call the Buyer Code: the three principles that determine whether you become the one they choose or get passed over.
And it works both online and offline. The most powerful precision business development systems are hybrid; they engineer the right relationships and opportunities through every available channel, both in-person and digital. Not one or the other. Both working together in a way that consistently opens the right doors and builds the right trust at scale.
The Buyer Code:
Trust is a Must.
High-caliber clients do not buy from people they do not trust. And trust is not built through ads or cold outreach alone. Great content can absolutely help build trust; it is part of your positioning. But content without the business development system behind it to cultivate the right relationships and conversations is “hope marketing” and leaves most of the opportunity on the table. The question is whether you have a system that consistently and strategically builds trust, or whether you’re relying on chance and hoping referrals and business will come your way.
One thing worth noting… with the right system, trust can be built quickly. The old thinking that building trust is slow is no longer the case. Given the rapid pace of technology and the internet, this thinking is outdated and no longer accurate.
Influence Over Information.
Most established experts give away enormous amounts of information. But information alone does not create decisions. Influence does. The difference between an expert who is constantly giving value and not getting paid for it and one whose clients are pre-sold before the conversation starts is not the quality of information. It is the precision of influence.
Positioning is Perception. And Perception Drives Decisions.
Positioning is the difference between being compared on price and setting the standard. Having to convince people or having them pre-sold. Being one of many options or being the only option.
Most people think positioning is telling people how long they have been in business or how experienced their team is. That is not positioning. That is a resume. Every competitor says the same thing.
Real positioning is what your ideal client immediately feels when they encounter you, the moment they think: this is exactly who I have been looking for.
This Works Even in a Regulated Industry
One of the most common things I hear from financial advisors, attorneys, CPAs, and other regulated professionals is that they can’t market the way other businesses do.
They are right about traditional marketing. Compliance constraints are real. But precision business development is not the same as traditional marketing. It does not require you to make claims you cannot support or run campaigns your compliance team would flag.
It requires you to build the right relationships, position yourself as the trusted authority, and engineer the conversations that lead to the right clients, without ever crossing a compliance line.
In fact, regulated professionals who master precision business development often dominate their market because their competitors hide behind the same compliance excuse.
The regulated industry is not your limitation. Your competitive advantage is ready to be unlocked.
What Becomes Possible
I have helped hundreds of business owners and experts across more than 80 industries go upmarket, win larger contracts, and command premium fees by positioning them as category one in their market and implementing the right business development systems that support getting paid premium prices and fees.
My clients have run the gamut. From a plumbing company that became so profitable and successful that it started buying out competitors and opening additional businesses, to an auto repair shop that we elevated, and he sold it for millions a couple of years later.
I help consultants, agency and firm owners, designers, architects, and others elevate their business, go upmarket, close the gaps that kept them from getting paid top dollar, working with the best clients and customers, and start winning business at the level their experience and expertise deserve.
You do not have a marketing problem. You have a precision business development gap.
The money is probably already there; you just are not capturing it.
Here is something I see consistently with established experts and firm owners: the six and seven-figure opportunity is not out there somewhere waiting to be found. It is already sitting right in front of them.
Many of my clients already had six and multiple six-figure sitting in one LinkedIn connection they had never leveraged properly. Or in one existing client they were already working with, but because of gaps in how they packaged, priced, and sold their services, their positioning, or their business development approach, they were not capturing what was available.
One conversation with the right person, positioned the right way, with the right offer behind it, can produce more revenue than months of traditional marketing ever would.
The opportunity is not out there somewhere. It is already sitting in your existing relationships and connections, waiting for the right system to capture it.
If This Is Landing for You
If this is a good fit for you and you are ready to stop leaving money on the table and start winning high-caliber clients and contracts your expertise deserves, I would love to have a candid conversation about your business and what is possible.
This is what I do. I work with a very small number of established experts, firm owners, consultants, and relationship- or referral-based business owners to engineer category-of-one positioning, build precision business development systems, and create a consistent pipeline of high-caliber clients and opportunities, even in regulated industries.
My clients tell me I am one of the best investments they have ever made in their business. I won’t take on anyone I don’t believe I can deliver results for.
If you want to explore what this could look like for your business, book a call here!
In this conversation, we’ll see if what I do aligns with what you need. And if it does, I will tell you exactly what working together looks like.
Until next time,
Ann Carden
