I want to share how to rethink making money in your business if you have pigeon-holed yourself into a lack of freedom.
This happens more with coaches, consultants, and entrepreneurs who are helping companies and businesses. I have seen coaches work more than a full-time job coaching clients. CRAZY, and NO THANK YOU!
This is the result of too much custom or private work that requires too much of your time.
Though the money may be great, it has limits, and it takes away your freedom.
If you can’t find a way to step out of so much fulfillment, spending too much time traveling or too much time inside your client’s companies, YOU DON’T HAVE A SCALABLE BUSINESS; you have a JOB working for different people.
If YOU are still doing the “thing” that must be delivered to the client or are working more than 10-12 hours a week delivering, you also have a job that takes too much of your time, AND YOU ARE LOSING MONEY!
This happened to me when I first started my coaching/consulting business years ago.
I was consulting with clients, and I always went to them. At that time, most of my clients were about an hour away from where I lived. Within the first 6 months, I realized I had a business I didn’t enjoy.
The only thing that saved me from exhaustion was advising them and not doing the work for them.
But, I was still spending too much time running around to each of my clients, and I also hadn’t priced myself right (though that still wouldn’t have made a difference with my time).
This was not what I thought my new business would be like.
In all of my other five businesses I had built and sold, I had removed myself from working in the business to working on the business. This is what also allowed me to sell the businesses. They were turn-key ready for someone else to buy and seamlessly take over.
So, I knew changes had to be made if I was going to love my business and my life.
Here is what I did to scale up my business and have a business and life I love.
- I restructured how I was selling my services and working with clients.
I determined how much money I wanted to make, limited the number of private clients I work with, and increased my fees 5x-10x to make the money I wanted.
- I set boundaries in my business and wouldn’t take on clients who expected or wanted me to work in their business or come to them.
- I formed a team of people who could help me get done many of the things that I was advising my clients they needed (this was also an up-sell, creating new income streams).
As long as I had internet, I could work my business from anywhere in the world and create my own schedule.
The most I work with a client is an hour every other week, remotely.
I personally will not work more than 10-12 hours per week with clients. This also includes my mastermind group time.
So, there are many ways to scale-up a business and get your life back, but you have to set up your business in a way that allows you to do this.
Changing my business model and structure has allowed me to learn and try many new things that have only made my business even more money and more enjoyable.
Build your business around your life, not your life around your business.
